Custom Counter Display Boxes That Work at the Point of Purchase

There is a reason every major consumer brand invests in counter display packaging. The area around a checkout till is where a shopper’s guard is lowest and their wallet is most accessible. They have already decided to spend money. They are standing still, often waiting, with their eyes moving around the counter. In that moment, a well-designed display box does not need to sell hard. It just needs to be visible, legible and compelling enough to make the decision easy.

At Hexa Custom Boxes, we make custom counter display boxes built for exactly that moment. Whether you are launching a new product into independent retail, supplying a pharmacy or garden centre chain, or shipping pre-filled displays directly into a supermarket, we build the display around your product, your brand and the retailer’s counter requirements, on terms designed for a growing business rather than a global FMCG brand.

PDQ, CDU, POS Display: What Is the Difference?

The terminology around counter displays confuses buyers more often than it should, and most UK suppliers do not bother explaining it. Here is the plain version.

PDQ stands for Pretty Darn Quick. A PDQ box is pre-filled with product before it ships, so a shop assistant opens the outer carton, removes the display and places it straight on the counter without any replenishment. Zero setup time for the retailer, which is exactly why buyers at major chains love them. The display ships as the shipping box and becomes the retail unit on arrival.

CDU stands for Counter Display Unit. This is an empty or partially assembled display that the retailer or brand’s own team fills in-store. It gives you more flexibility on replenishment but asks more of the retailer.

POS display is the broader term covering both, plus any point-of-sale merchandising unit.

Knowing which format suits your retail channel is one of the most important structural decisions you will make, and we will help you get it right before anything is designed.

Styles and Structures

Counter displays come in several distinct constructions, and the right one depends on your product, your unit count and how the display will be replenished.

Style Description Best For
Open tray (PDQ) Low-sided tray with product visible from the front Pre-filled, self-serve impulse products
Tiered tray Two or three stepped levels showing multiple rows Showing multiple products or variants clearly
Header card display Tray with a tall printed panel above the product Brand storytelling and promotional messaging
Enclosed CDU Box-style unit with product in open-fronted compartments Products needing partial enclosure
Gravity-fed dispenser Angled inner track that brings product to the front automatically Lip balms, pens, small cylindrical products
Spinner or rotating Multi-sided rotating unit High-SKU ranges needing maximum variety in a small footprint

The Counter Space Question Every Retailer Will Ask

Here is what most brands discover after they have already had their display rejected: counter space is rationed. Retailers, from independent pharmacies to national supermarket chains, measure their counter real estate carefully and have strict rules about what goes on it. A display that arrives without agreed dimensions, that is too tall for the retailer’s preferred sightlines, or that takes up more footprint than the buyer allocated, will be returned or refused before a single customer sees it.

The standard counter display footprint that fits most UK independent retail counters is around 150mm to 200mm deep and 100mm to 300mm wide, with a maximum height of around 350mm to 400mm from the counter surface. For national retailers, the buyer will give you a specific brief. We design your display to those numbers, not the other way round. If you are approaching a retailer and have not yet received a specification, we can help you ask the right questions before you commit to a design.

Board Specification and Load Capacity

A display holding twelve lip balms behaves very differently from one holding eight glass candle jars. The board needs to be matched to what it carries. The guide below helps you find the right starting point.

Product Weight Recommended Board Typical Spec
Light, up to 1kg total Single-wall corrugated or folding board E-flute, 350gsm to 450gsm
Medium, 1kg to 4kg total Single-wall corrugated B-flute or C-flute
Heavy, 4kg and above Double-wall corrugated BC-flute
Glass or fragile products Double-wall with internal cell dividers BC-flute with insert

Internal cell dividers and inserts protect products from knocking against each other during transit and keep the display looking organised on the counter. We design and supply those as part of the same order, so the whole unit arrives ready to use.

Print That Sells From Three Feet Away

A counter display has roughly three seconds to earn a customer’s attention from across the counter. That means the print needs to work at distance as well as up close. Big, clear product identification, a single strong visual or colour, your brand name large enough to read without stepping closer, and a price point or call to action if space allows. We print in full CMYK with Pantone spot-colour matching, and we design counter displays with viewing distance in mind, not just how they look in a flat artwork file.

Finishes include matt and gloss lamination, spot UV for highlighted logos and product names, and foil stamping for premium retail positioning. The header card, the tall panel above the product area, is the highest-impact print surface on the display and the place to make the brand statement that stops a customer mid-step.

Seasonal Refresh Without Reprinting Everything

One of the most practical questions a brand asks about counter displays, and one almost no UK supplier answers, is how to update them for seasonal campaigns without reprinting the entire unit. The answer is a modular header card design: the main tray stays the same across runs, and only the header card changes for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, summer and so on. This halves your reprinting cost for seasonal activity and lets you hold a stock of trays without locking in a specific campaign message. If this is relevant to how you sell, tell us when you request your quote and we will design the dieline to accommodate it from the start.

The Commercial Case: Display Packaging Built for Growing Brands

No die and plate charges. A custom counter display needs a cutting die and printing plates, and most suppliers bill those to you before the first unit is made. We absorb them, so a trial run, a new product launch or a seasonal refresh stays affordable without a large upfront commitment.

Minimums from just 100 units. You do not need to fill a warehouse to test a display format in retail. Start at 100, prove the format works, then scale to bulk wholesale volumes as distribution grows.

Made in the UK, 8 to 10 working days. Printing and finishing locally means a turnaround you can plan a retail listing around. No port delays, no customs queues, no guessing about when it will arrive.

Sustainability That Retailers Increasingly Require

Major UK retailers are tightening their packaging sustainability requirements, and counter display units are not exempt. Our corrugated and folding board is available in recycled-content and FSC-certified stock. Water-based inks, aqueous coatings and recyclable board mean the whole display can be kerbside-recyclable at end of life, which is increasingly a condition of listing with responsible retailers. If your buyer requires specific certifications, tell us the standard and we will spec to match. And if you are reporting under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), we will give you the material information you need to do that accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a PDQ box and a counter display unit?
A PDQ ships pre-filled so the retailer places it straight on the counter with zero setup. A CDU is filled in-store. PDQs are preferred by major retailers because they save staff time. We will recommend the right format for your channel.
How do I know if my display will fit on a retailer's counter?
Most UK independent retail counters suit a footprint of 150mm to 200mm deep by 100mm to 300mm wide and a maximum height of around 350mm to 400mm. For national accounts, the buyer will give you a specific brief. We design to those numbers from the start.
What board do you use, and how much weight can it hold?
E-flute folding board suits light products up to around 1kg total. B or C-flute single-wall handles up to 4kg. Double-wall corrugated covers anything heavier or fragile. We match the board to your product weight and advise on internal dividers for glass or delicate items.
Can I update seasonal artwork without reprinting the whole display?
Yes. We design header card panels as a separate element so you can refresh Christmas, Valentine’s Day or seasonal messaging without reprinting the tray. Tell us at quoting stage and we will build the dieline to accommodate it.
What is the minimum order, and are there die charges?
You can order from just 100 units, with no die or plate charges, even though a counter display needs a custom cutting die and printing plates. Standard turnaround is 8 to 10 working days from artwork approval.
Are they recyclable and suitable for retailers with sustainability requirements?
Yes. Our corrugated and folding board is available in FSC-certified and recycled-content stock, printed with water-based inks, and the whole unit can be kerbside-recyclable. We can provide the material information you need for EPR reporting and retailer sustainability audits.
